'Rap God' Eminem, Rihanna Fend off Pitbull, Kesha For Top Billboard Hot 100 Spot
Eminem and Rihanna have retained the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for the fourth straight week, holding off a strong bite from Pitbull and Kesha's track "Timber," which fell to no. 2, also for the fourth week in a row.
"The Monster" has helped Rihanna move into sole possession of the third-most total weeks at No. 1 (51) in the chart's history, Billboard reports. The track slipped 7% to 136 million in all-format audience impressions, according to Nielsen BDS, but added 433,000 downloads sold this week (up 124%), according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Rihann's 51st week in the top spot pushes her past Boyz II Men (50 weeks) for third-most time spent at the summit in the chart's 55-year history. Mariah Carey leads with 79 total weeks at No. 1 and is followed by the Beatles (59 weeks).
Billboard notes that the difference in overall chart points between "The Monster" and "Timber" shrunk from 17% last week to just 6% this week, meaning Rihanna and Em may have to invoke a bit more fear in their competition to stay on top for another week.
"The Monster" also finished first for the ninth consecutive week on both the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Rap Songs charts.
The collaboration is the second chart-topper for the dynamic pair, who previously achieved 11-time platinum honors for their 2010 track "Love The Way You Lie."
Shot in "Rap God" Em's native Detroit, the song's music video was directed Rich Lee, who previously worked with the rapper on "Lighters" and "Not Afraid."
While Ri-Ri's chart-topping past with Eminem would seem like enough for the 40-year-old to suggest another hookup on Marshall Mathers LP 2, it wasn't the Barbadian singer's vocals that made her perfect for the track.
"The perception of the record, what it's saying, I thought it would be a good idea to have her on it because I think people look at us like we're both a little nuts. That's one of the things that I was telling her in making the record: I think that people look at us a little crazy," Eminem told MTV News.
He continued:
"As soon as I got the beat I just heard her on it," Em said. "I wanted to make sure that I had it finished first to be able to present to her, but once I had the rhymes done, I sent it to her.
"I had to send it to her because schedules were conflicting and sh-- like that. Plus, the record it was kinda pulled together at the last minute," Em admitted. "I sent it to her, she laid the hook, sent it back. She smashed it like she does always. It's pretty incredible."
